About the project

It is a mapping project based on an island, 'Tung Ping Chau' in Hong Kong. I have collected pre-existing maps of 'Tung Ping Chau', from Qing dynasty until now, maps by different institutions, military maps, Geopark maps, tourist maps etc. During the project, I have invited people to become 'cartographers', and went to the island with me, draw maps about the island and exhibit them with 'official maps'. 'Cartographers' are reminded to consider their maps have to carry real documentation of the place; their selection of the documentation; and the documentation will be presented to the public.

Maps of a place are usually drawn and published by different authorities, institutions and publisher. And based on the initial concerns and purposes of these parties, diverse narratives, mapping methods and emphasis are used to represent a place. However, these maps are shaping our understanding of a place, such as the name, characteristic, history and culture of it.

Are there any alternative narratives that can help us to access hidden realities? What happens when every 'amateur' has the power to publish a map of a place and establish an individual own narrative? And what if we let the island speaks to us?
